How long will I wait for Public Housing assistance?
The Public Housing waiting list is seldom ever closed. Your place on the waiting list is determined by multiple factors including the preferences that you claim on your application for assistance. Because the agency takes applications for Public Housing year round, your position may change on the list at any time. You may move up or down on the list depending on all other applications that are received. For instance, you may call on Monday and ask where you are on the list. You are told that you are number 101 on the 1 bedroom list. On Tuesday and Wednesday, people apply with more preferences than you have. You call back on the following Friday and find out that you are now number 104 on the list. This is why the FWHA strongly discourages applicants from calling regarding their position on the list.
It is critical that you update your application any time there is a change in your household information or your preferences. It is also vital that you make sure that you update your address as soon as it changes. Many applicants fail to come in and update their address when they move and are subsequently dropped from the waiting list when they do not respond to mail from the FWHA or mail sent by the FWHA is returned by the post office as undeliverable.
