Housing Choice Voucher

(aka Section 8) FAQ

What are Housing Choice Vouchers?

The housing choice voucher program provides assistance to very-low-income families including, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own suitable housing. FWHA strongly encourages participants to search for housing outside economically distressed areas. However, all units must meet minimum standards of health and safety and other requirements of the program.

The FWHA receives federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) based on congressional appropriation to administer the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

How to apply?

Written applications are accepted only during an open waiting list period. When the waiting list becomes open, all relevant information will be advertised in the local newspapers and posted on FWHA website (www.fwha.org).

During the open waiting list period, the FWHA will collect information on the household income, assets, and composition. All applicants will be placed on a waiting list based on time/date; and documented preferences.

Once selected from the waiting list, the applicant will be offered an opportunity to interview to determine eligibility for the program. FWHA verifies an applicant’s information with other local agencies, law enforcement, employer and bank. If determined eligible, an applicant will be invited to attend a briefing for issuance of the housing choice voucher.
